Bateson. Palo Alto. Double Bind. 50 years (already).
« Palo Alto 1956. Bateson and his team created a bit of scandal in the field of psychiatry, upset traditional ways of thinking and laid the foundations of modern psychiatry.
In a famous article headed « Toward a Theory of Schizophenia », they laid open an interactional approach of “mental illness”, giving birth to systemic and family therapies.
The basic foundations of our vision of the human being were shaken and then rebuilt on new concepts, deriving from cybernetics and systems theory: information, control, feedback, logical levels, paradoxes,…
A new vision of the human being had come to life. What has it become 50 years later?
The results can be qualified as half satisfactory. Indeed, against this revolution (rather than evolution), the psychiatric sphere set an opposition proportional to the changes brought by Bateson. For the majority of psychologists, the concept of “relation” is still as empty and abstract as it was before Bateson introduced it in human sciences.
Nevertheless, the concepts of “paradox” and “double bind”, indissolubly linked to the school of Palo Alto, have widely gone beyond the field of psychotherapy.
What is the situation today regarding the systemic paradigm? Is constructivism shelving the « double bind » indefinitely? Or, to the contrary, is the potential of this major theory only beginning to expand in our Western culture?
This conference aims precisely at answering these questions, fifty years later… »
